Old Hannibal

Old Hannibal (c. 1800 - May 7, 1865) was a famous 19th century Asiatic elephant that was part of Isaac A. Van Amburgh's menagerie.
==History==

Hannibal was brought to the United States as early as 1824 according to early sources,〔(22 June 1901). (Answers ), ''Boston Evening Transcript''〕 but at least by 1831. He was first called "Timour the Tartar" and renamed by Raymond, Weeks & Co. in 1833 as "War Elephant Hannibal".〔Kogan, Lee. (Quilt Connection ), ''Folk Art'', p. 78-79 (Fall 2005) (article includes history of Hannibal as part of discussing a quilt with a square depicting Hannibal and his trainer from 1851-63, B. Frank Thomas)〕
He was known for having "fits of fury",〔(A Brief Biographical Sketch of I.A. Van Amburgh ), pp. 25-28 (1860)〕 and reportedly killed several people.〔〔(18 January 1882). (Crazy Elephants ), ''The River Press''〕 Around 1839, he engaged in a fight with Columbus, another huge elephant, in Algiers, New Orleans; Columbus also killed two men that day.〔(A Circus Remembrance ), ''Bandwagon'' (April-May 1954) (running story from 1869 edition of ''Cincinnati Chronicle'')〕〔Oswandel, J. Jacob. (Notes on the Mexican War ), p. 28-29 (1885)〕 In June 1854, he escaped his keeper near Pawtucket, Rhode Island and ran many miles before being captured.〔(29 April 2010). ('Lions & Tigers & Bears, O My?' NO: Rampaging Elephants & an African Rhino's Escape to Freedom during the Civil War! ), Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Hidden History Blog〕 And in November 1859, he caused a scene when he briefly escaped from captivity in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, injuring one man and freeing other animals from their cages on his way.〔(5 November 1859). (Tremendous Excitement - An Elephant Loose in the Streets ), ''The Sun (New York)'', p. 2, col. 6〕 In October 1862, he killed a "partially deranged" man who irritated him in Caldwell, Ohio, whereupon Van Amburgh had his tusks sawn off.〔(18 October 1862). (A man killed by the elephant Hannibal ), ''Daily Dispatch''〕
One winter, Hannibal was wintered next to "Queen Anne", a female elephant from a different traveling circus unit, and it was said to be "a case of love at first sight," with mutual affection displayed between the elephants all winter. Hannibal became very depressed when they were parted in the spring, refusing to eat for eleven days (drinking only water and whiskey), and on the next day briefly escaping his fastenings in a rage.〔Nance, Susan. (Entertaining Elephants: Animal Agency and the Business of the American Circus ) (2013)〕〔(12 November 1862). (An Elephant on a Bender ), ''Urbana Union''〕
